On November 6, the Canadian government notified the popular video app TikTok to cease operations in Canada due to national security concerns, ordering the company to gradually downsize its offices in Toronto (Ontario) and Vancouver (British Columbia).<\/p>\n
Fran\u00e7ois-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, said the move was based on information and evidence that had surfaced from a national security review, as well as advice from Canada’s intelligence agencies. He said he could not go into details, but added, “Canadians should understand that when the federal government takes such measures in the interest of national security, it is a serious matter.”<\/p>\n
The federal government stressed that the measure does not restrict access to TikTok, saying using the app is a personal choice, but Champagne said people should consider the risks if they use it.<\/p>\n
The Canadian Security Intelligence Service has urged Canadians, especially young people, to be wary of TikTok. In February 2023, the Canadian government banned the use of TikTok on government electronic devices.<\/p>\n
TikTok has said it will take legal action in response to the notice.<\/p>\n
