Statistics Canada reported that household debt-to-disposable income ratios decreased in the third quarter of 2024 as income growth outpaced debt growth. This is the sixth consecutive quarter of decline.<\/p>\n
According to Statistics Canada, the household credit market debt ratio in the third quarter was 173.1% on a seasonally adjusted basis, down from 175.3% in the second quarter. This means that households owe $1.73 of their disposable income for every dollar they earn.<\/p>\n
The main reason for the decline in the household debt ratio is the significant increase in disposable income. Household disposable income increased by 2% in the third quarter compared to the previous quarter, while debt service increased by only 0.2%.<\/p>\n
The debt service ratio, an indicator of the household debt service burden, decreased from 14.98% in the second quarter to 14.72% in the third quarter. This indicator shows how much of the income earned by a household was used to repay the principal and interest of its credit market debt.<\/p>\n
These results show that household financial soundness is gradually improving along with the overall recovery of the Canadian economy.<\/p>\n
Statistics Canada analysed that the increase in household disposable income was mainly due to employment growth and wage growth, and that this income growth exceeded the rate of debt growth and contributed to lowering the debt ratio. Meanwhile, the increase in debt is continuing, but income growth is offsetting it, reducing the burden on household finances.<\/p>\n
Experts predicted that if the job market continues to stabilize and income growth continues, the debt ratio will continue to decrease in the coming quarters. Although Canada’s household debt ratio remains high, the recent decline is considered a positive sign.<\/p>\n
Experts analysed that households have more room to manage their debt and prepare for economic uncertainty by utilizing their increased income. However, the Bank of Canada’s interest rate policy, global economic uncertainty, and housing market trends are identified as variables that will have a significant impact on the household debt ratio.<\/p>\n
