In 2024, despite ongoing economic hardships, Canada is experiencing a notable surge in charitable giving. According to the 2024 Most Giving Provinces<\/em> report from GoFundMe Canada, a total of $280 million was raised across the country this year, marking an 8% increase from the previous year. This increase shows that many Canadians continue to support charitable causes, despite the mounting economic pressures such as rising living costs.<\/p>\n

“Canadians have not lost their willingness to help others even in difficult situations,” said Bedkan, senior manager of GoFundMe Canada. “This year\u2019s campaigns symbolize the indomitable power of the human spirit, and the goodness of people always shines through even in adversity.” Victoria, BC, was named the top donating province for the second consecutive year. The province saw 19,500 donors participate, leading the country in total donations. With a population of just 92,000, Victoria had an impressive 21.3% donation rate, meaning one in five residents contributed to campaigns. North Vancouver, St. John\u2019s, Vancouver, and Milton rounded out the top five. GoFundMe attributed the high donation rates in British Columbia and Ontario to their deeply ingrained culture of giving and community solidarity. \u201cIn these places, giving is not just about individual efforts, but about community engagement and collaboration,\u201d said Khan.<\/p>\n

Several inspiring campaigns stood out in 2024. Ryan Kipping, a Halifax resident, raised $252,000 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Inspired by Terry Fox, Kipping ran an ultramarathon across Canada in under 100 days to raise funds, and his campaign resonated deeply with Canadians. Additionally, Megan Needles and Tyler Sonnenberg raised nearly $200,000 to support Tyler after the sudden death of his wife. GoFundMe noted that these campaigns and the generosity of donors throughout the year underscored the strength of human solidarity and compassion, even amid tough economic times. This spirit of giving is expected to continue to positively impact Canadian society in the years to come.<\/p>\n
