On Thursday, December 19, Toronto police confirmed the death of Detective John Park, a 14-year veteran of the Homicide Unit, who tragically passed away in the line of duty just days before Christmas. Detective Park suffered a sudden medical abnormality while executing a search warrant during a robbery investigation early that morning. He was transported to the hospital, where he later died.
Toronto Police Chief Lauren Fogg expressed deep sorrow during a press conference at Humber River Hospital. “Detective John Park leaves behind two children, ages 9 and 5, and a wife. This is tragic news just days before Christmas, and I cannot express in words how sad I am,” she said. Chief Fogg described Detective Park as a respected member of the Homicide Unit, who began his career in the 22nd Precinct. He was also a dedicated father and colleague.
Chief Myron Demkeu of the Toronto Police also paid tribute on social media, calling Detective Park’s death a shock to the entire police family, and offering support to his family and loved ones.
While the cause of death is still under investigation, there has been speculation about a possible drug exposure, although Chief Fogg clarified, “We are currently not assessing drugs as being related.”
The loss of Detective Park has also drawn expressions of condolence from other emergency service agencies, including the Toronto Regional Emergency Services, York Regional Police, and Durham Regional Police.
